Farewell of Imam Ja'far Al-Sadiq (AS) to the blessed month of Ramadan.

From Abu Basir, from Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him) in the farewell of the month of Ramadan:1

O Allah, indeed You have said in Your revealed Book, through the tongue of Your sent Prophet—may Your blessings be upon him and his family—and Your word is truth: "The month of Ramadan in which the Qur'an was revealed."

And now this month of Ramadan has passed. So I ask You, by Your noble countenance and by Your perfect words, if there remains upon me any sin that You have not forgiven, or if You intend to punish me for it, or hold me accountable for it, that before the dawn of this night rises or before this month fully departs, You forgive it for me, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

O Allah, to You belongs all praise, with all its forms, from its beginning to its end, for what You have praised Yourself with, and for what the praisers among Your creation—those who strive, enumerate, and devote themselves to remembering and thanking You—have praised You with. Those whom You have aided in fulfilling Your right, from among the various kinds of Your creation: from the near angels, the prophets and messengers, and the ranks of those who glorify You among all the worlds.

That You have allowed us to reach the month of Ramadan, while upon us are Your blessings, and within us is Your provision and generosity, and Your continuous grace upon us. To You belongs the utmost praise—eternal, everlasting, steadfast, and perpetual, which never ends throughout eternity. Exalted is Your praise! You aided us in it until we completed its fasting and its prayers, and whatever good, gratitude, or remembrance we performed in it.

O Allah, so accept it from us with the best of Your acceptance, with Your pardon, forgiveness, clemency, and mercy, and with the reality of Your pleasure, so that:

• You grant us in it every sought-after good and abundant bestowed bounty.
• And that You grant us security in it from every feared matter and every earned sin.

O Allah, I ask You by the greatest request anyone from Your creation has ever asked You, by Your noble names, by Your abundant praise, and by the exclusivity of Your supplication.

• To send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.
• And to make this month of ours the greatest month of Ramadan that has ever passed upon us since You placed us in this world, in blessings for the preservation of my faith, the salvation of my soul, the fulfillment of my needs, the acceptance of my requests, the completion of Your blessings upon me, the warding off of harm from me, and the granting of well-being to me.
• And that You make me, by Your mercy, among those to whom You have granted Laylat al-Qadr, and made it for them better than a thousand months, with the greatest reward, the noblest treasures, prolonged life, excellent gratitude, and continuous ease.

O Allah, I ask You by Your mercy, Your generosity, Your pardon, Your blessings, Your majesty, and Your eternal kindness and grace.

• That You do not make this the last time we experience the month of Ramadan, but rather allow us to reach it again in the coming year in the best of states.
• And that You let me witness its crescent moon along with those who see it and recognize it, while I am in the best of Your protection, the greatest of Your blessings, the widest of Your mercy, and the most abundant of Your provisions.

O Allah, my Lord, the One besides whom I have no other Lord, let this farewell not be a farewell of ending, nor the last encounter with Ramadan, but rather allow me to see it again in the future, surrounded by the most complete blessings, the highest hopes, and while I remain faithful to You in the best way. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplications.

• O Allah, hear my supplication, my plea, my humility before You, my surrender, and my reliance upon You.
• I am at peace with You, and I seek no success, no well-being, no honor, nor any achievement except through You and from You.
• So grant me, exalted is Your praise and sanctified are Your names, the blessing of reaching the month of Ramadan again while I am free from every hardship, fear, and affliction.
• All praise is due to Allah, who enabled us to fast and stand in prayer during this month until He allowed us to reach its final night.

O Allah, I ask You by the most beloved supplication with which You have been called, and by that which is most pleasing to You in Your acceptance of Muhammad, to send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.

And do not make my farewell to the month of Ramadan a farewell to my departure from this world, nor the last of my worship in it, nor the last of my fasting for You.

• Grant me the return to it, and then the return to it again, by Your mercy, O Guardian of the believers.
• And grant me success in attaining Laylat al-Qadr, and make it for me better than a thousand months, O Lord of the worlds.
• O Lord of Laylat al-Qadr, the One who has made it better than a thousand months.
• Lord of the night and the day, the mountains and the seas, the darkness and the light, the earth and the sky.
• O Creator, O Shaper, O Most Compassionate, O Most Generous.
• O Allah, O Most Merciful, O Most Compassionate, O Ever-Living, O Originator of the heavens and the earth.

To You belong the Most Beautiful Names, the Highest Examples, the Majesty, and the Divine Blessings.

• I ask You, by Your Name, "In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful," to send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.
• And to place my name on this night among the blessed, my soul among the martyrs, my good deeds in ‘Illiyyin, and my sins forgiven.
• And to grant me a certainty that settles in my heart, a faith untainted by doubt, and contentment with what You have decreed for me. And to grant me goodness in this world and goodness in the Hereafter, and to protect me from the punishment of the Fire.

O Allah, in what You decree and ordain from the irrevocable matter, and in what You determine from the wise command on Laylat al-Qadr, in the judgment that cannot be repelled, altered, or changed—write me among those who perform Hajj to Your Sacred House, whose pilgrimage is accepted, whose efforts are appreciated, whose sins are forgiven, and whose misdeeds are erased.

And decree for me, in what You ordain and determine, that my neck be freed from the Fire, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

O Allah, I ask You, and no servant has asked anyone like You in generosity and bounty.

And I turn to You with longing, and no one is turned to like You.

You are the destination of those who ask, and the ultimate hope of those who seek.

• I ask You with the greatest, most virtuous, and most successful of all supplications, which the servants ought to ask You with.
• O Allah, O Most Merciful, O Most Compassionate, and by Your Names, those I know and those I do not know.
• And by Your Most Beautiful Names, Your Highest Attributes, and Your countless blessings.
• And by the most honoured of Your Names to You, the dearest to You, the most exalted in status before You, the closest to You as a means, the most abundant in reward from You, and the swiftest in response to You.
• And by Your hidden, treasured Name, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining, the Greatest, the Most Majestic, the One You love and cherish, and by which You are pleased with whoever calls upon You with it, and to whom You answer their supplication, and it is incumbent upon You not to disappoint those who ask of You.
• And I ask You by every Name that belongs to You, in the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the Quran.
• And by every Name by which the bearers of Your Throne, the angels of Your heavens, and the inhabitants of Your earth—whether prophet, truthful one, or martyr—have called upon You.
• And by the right of those who long for You, those who fear You, and those who seek refuge in You.
• And by the right of those who dwell near Your Sacred House, whether pilgrims, performers of Umrah, or those in devotion, and those who strive in Your cause.
• And by the right of every servant devoted to You, whether on land or sea, in plains or mountains.

I call upon You with the supplication of one whose need has intensified, whose sins have multiplied, whose transgression is great, and whose effort is weak.

• The supplication of one who finds no refuge for himself, no support for his weakness, and no forgiver of his sins but You.
• Fleeing to You, seeking refuge in You, devoted to You, neither arrogant nor disdainful.
• Fearful, distressed, impoverished, seeking shelter with You.

I ask You by Your Might and Majesty, by Your Power and Sovereignty, by Your Dominion and Splendour, by Your Generosity and Honour.

• And by Your blessings, Your beauty, and Your perfection, and by Your absolute power over all that You will from Your creation.
• I call upon You, my Lord, in fear and in hope, in awe and in longing, in humility and in servitude, in supplication and persistence, in insistence and urgency.
• In submission to You—there is no god but You, alone, with no partner.
• O Most Holy, O Most Holy, O Most Holy!
• O Allah, O Allah, O Allah! 
• O Most Merciful, O Most Merciful, O Most Merciful!
• O Most Compassionate, O Most Compassionate, O Most Compassionate!
• O Lord, O Lord, O Lord!
• I seek refuge in You, O Allah, the One, the Only, the Eternal Refuge, the Singular, the Supreme, the Most High.

I ask You by all that I have called upon You with, and by Your names that fill all Your corners, to send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, forgive me, have mercy on me, and grant me an expansion of Your great favour.

• And accept from me the month of Ramadan, its fasting, its standing in prayer, its obligatory acts, and its voluntary acts.
• Forgive me, have mercy on me, and pardon me.
• Do not make it the last of my Ramadan. I fasted it for You, and I worshipped You in it.
• And do not let my farewell to it be the farewell of my departure from this world.

O Allah, make it incumbent upon me from Your mercy, forgiveness, pleasure, and fear, the best that You have granted to anyone who has worshipped You in it.

O Allah, do not make me the worst of those who have asked You in it, and make me one of those whom You have freed from the Fire this month. And forgive for him what has passed of his sins and what is yet to come. And grant him the best of what he hoped and desired from You, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

O Allah, grant me the return to fasting for You, and to worship You in it. And make me one of those whom You have written this month among Your pilgrims to Your sacred house, whose pilgrimage is accepted, whose sins are forgiven, and whose deeds are accepted. Ameen, Ameen, Ameen, Lord of all the worlds.

O Allah, do not leave me in it with any sin, except that You have forgiven it.

• And no mistake, except that You have erased it.
• No stumble, except that You have forgiven it.
• No debt, except that You have paid it.
• No poverty, except that You have enriched it.
• No worry, except that You have relieved it.
• No need, except that You have fulfilled it.
• No nakedness, except that You have clothed it.
• No illness, except that You have healed it.
• No disease, except that You have removed it.
• And no need from the needs of this world or the Hereafter, except that You have fulfilled it, in the best of my hopes and desires for You, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

O Allah, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us, and do not disgrace us after You have honoured us.

• Do not let us fall after You have elevated us, and do not humiliate us after You have honoured us.
• Do not impoverish us after You have enriched us, and do not withhold from us after You have given to us.
• Do not deprive us after You have provided for us.
• And do not change anything from Your blessings upon us, nor Your kindness towards us, for something that was from our sins, or for what is yet to come from us.
• For in Your generosity, forgiveness, and grace, there is ample space for the forgiveness of our sins.
• So forgive us, overlook us, and do not punish us for them, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

O Allah, honour me in this gathering of mine, with an honour that will never disgrace me afterwards.

And grant me dignity that will never humiliate me afterwards, and grant me health that will never be afflicted afterwards.

And raise me to a level that will never lower me afterwards.

And turn away from me the evil of every rebellious devil, and the evil of every tyrant, and the evil of every close or distant one.

And the evil of every small or large thing, and the evil of every creature whose forelock You hold.

Indeed, my Lord is on a straight path.

O Allah, whatever doubt or suspicion, or denial or despair, or grief or joy, or arrogance or pride, or ostentation or showing off, or seeking attention or discord, or hypocrisy or disbelief, or sin or disobedience, or anything that You do not like in my heart or in relation to Your allies:

• I ask You to erase it from my heart and replace it with: faith in You, contentment with Your decree, loyalty to Your covenant, and awe of You. And with detachment from the world, a desire for what is with You, trust in You, serenity in You, and sincere repentance to You.
• O Allah, if You have made us reach this point, then let it be; but if not, delay our appointed time until the next year, so that You can enable us to reach it with ease and well-being from You, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

And may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon Muhammad and his pure, good family, and may Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon them all.
