The Grave Secret in the Hadith of Ghadir
Since the Greatest Messenger, Muhammad (peace & blessings be upon him and his family), does not speak from [his own] desire 1 and it is nothing but a revelation revealed,2 and since he fulfilled the command of God Almighty: O Messenger! Convey that which has been sent down to you from your Lord. If you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people…3
—He proclaimed the guardianship of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali, saying:
“O Allah, be the ally of whoever allies him (Ali), and be the enemy of whoever opposes him, support whoever supports him, forsake whoever forsakes him, and make the truth turn with him wherever he turns.”
And since, through this proclamation, the religion was completed and the blessing perfected, as God says: Today I have perfected your religion for you, and completed My blessing upon you…4
—It becomes incumbent upon us to contemplate this Hadith deeply and to extract from it the reason for our current condition.
In the Prophet’s supplication, there is an invocation that allegiance be with those who support Ali, and enmity upon those who oppose him, victory to those who aid him, and abandonment for those who abandon him…
It is evident to every person of insight that the Alawites today are in a state of abandonment, due to the collapse of an entire societal system...
According to the supplication of the Noble Prophet, this abandonment we suffer is a result of our abandonment of the Commander of the Faithful, as he said: “And forsake whoever forsakes him.” Indeed, we abandoned the Imam, so the Lord of humanity has abandoned us.
We abandoned Ali, the one who declared to the world: “Away with you, O world! Deceive someone else! I have divorced you three times, with no return.”
Yet, we contradicted him when the deceptive world approached us, and we fell into its embrace.
Yes, we opposed you, O Ali, and did not follow you when you said: "Deceive someone else."
Instead, we believed its deception and embraced its evil.
The world deluded us, and we drowned in it. We clung to it—and it stung us with its venom.
And you, O Ali, had made its reality clear to us: "Its touch is soft, but its poison is deadly."
You told us: "A time will come upon the people when they will have more trust in their dirhams than in their Lord."
And many among us reached that point—trusting their wealth, obeying it, seeking refuge in it instead of God—falsely and wrongfully.
So how can we truly be your followers, O Commander of the Faithful?
You said to Ibn Abbas as you were mending your sandal in Dhi Qar: "The worth of your leadership to me is no more than the worth of this worn-out sandal—unless I can use it to uphold a right or repel a wrong."
Yet we contradicted you—we turned leadership into a goal in itself, for which we sacrificed the dearest and most precious, practiced all forms of hypocrisy and deceit for its sake, and formed alliances with those who resemble Iblis.
So how could we ever be considered among your loyal ones, O Commander of the Faithful?
You told us:
“Indeed, Allah has prescribed obligations for you—do not neglect them.
He has set limits for you—do not overstep them.
And He has left certain matters undefined—so do not burden yourselves with them.”
But we treated the obligations lightly until we lost them, we transgressed the limits, and we burdened ourselves with what Allah purposely left alone, doing what we were clearly forbidden to do.
So how can we be your followers, O Ali?
How can we begin to count the many ways in which we have violated your path, ignored your instructions, and disobeyed your commands?
How often have we taken on what you warned us against?
How often have we neglected what you required of us?
How blind have we been to the nobility of your traits, the perfection of your actions, and the wisdom of your words?
We have disobeyed you.
We have betrayed ourselves and betrayed you, O our Master, O Commander of the Faithful.
And we have therefore deserved the prayer of the Prophet.
“Indeed, we abandoned the Imam, so the Lord of all people abandoned us.”
O Messenger of God,
We have lost your intercession by betraying our covenant to the one to whom you entrusted leadership,
We failed to show true loyalty to Ali,
We lost our way, straying from the path of guidance, and followed the roads of misguidance…
O Commander of the Faithful,
Arrogance took hold of us—and we fell into evil.
You warned us against “following desire and indulging in long hopes”—
but we walked straight into the trap you warned us against.
We confess our greatest sin:
Pretending to belong to you—a claim passed down to us as mere words, without living up to it in action.
We know that your heart overflows with agony from us,
and that your chest is filled with anger because of us.
So we plead for your pardon, O Master, your pardon.
O Messenger of God,
We stand before this great proclamation—the Hadith of Ghadir—in the stance of the helpless—fully admitting our grave sin. It is both a confession and an apology—from the part on behalf of the whole.
For the proclamation was universal,
but its hearing was selective,
and its true adherence was reserved for the elite of the elite...
Indeed, God has tested us with love—and when God loves a servant, He tries him.
So O Allah, let this trial be the catalyst for the believers to rediscover the true essence of wilayah (devoted loyalty).
