This is the supplication narrated from Imam Zain al-Abidin, Ali ibn al-Hussain (peace be upon him), for Eid al-Fitr and Friday, as found in Al-Sahifa Al-Sajjadiya:

  • You who shows mercy to those whom no one else has mercy on.

  • You who accepts those whom no land accepts.

  • You who does not belittle those in need of You.

  • You who does not turn away those who persist in asking You.

  • You who does not reject those who have confidence in You.

  • You who accepts even the smallest offerings and appreciates the slightest deeds done for You.

  • You who rewards even the little and grants immense blessings.

  • You who draws near to those who come close to You.

  • You who calls back those who have turned away from You.

  • You who does not change His blessings nor hasten His punishment.

  • You who makes good deeds grow until they flourish and forgives sins until they are erased.

Hopes fall short of reaching the extent of Your generosity with their needs, and the vessels of requests are filled to the brim with the overflow of Your bounty. Descriptions fail to capture the magnitude of Your attributes. Supreme is Your exaltation above all that is high, and most glorious is Your majesty above all that is majestic. Every great thing before You is small, and every honourable thing next to Your honour is insignificant.

Those who seek others besides You are disappointed, and those who turn elsewhere fail. Those who seek refuge in any but You are lost, and those who seek sustenance elsewhere are left barren—except those who seek Your bounty.

Your door is open to those who desire, Your generosity is available to those who ask, and Your relief is near to those who seek help. Those who hope in You are never turned away. Those who seek Your grace never despair. Those who repent to You are never ruined by Your punishment.

Your provision reaches even those who disobey You, and Your forbearance extends even to those who oppose You. Your practice is to show kindness to wrongdoers, and Your way is to spare the transgressors. So much so that Your patience has deluded them from returning, and Your delay has deterred them from repenting. Yet, You only grant them respite so they may return to Your command, and You give them time because You trust in the permanence of Your dominion.

For those destined for happiness, You seal their fate with it. And those destined for wretchedness, You abandon them to it. All will ultimately be subject to Your judgment, and all affairs will return to Your decree. Your sovereignty has not weakened despite the long passage of time, nor has Your proof been refuted by delaying their punishment.

Your evidence stands firm and undeniable, and Your authority remains unshaken. So everlasting woe is for those who turn away from You, and utter loss is for those who fail to seek You. The greatest misery is for those deceived by false hope in You—how much they will suffer in Your torment! How long they will linger in Your punishment! How far they are from relief! How completely they despair of an easy escape!

Your judgment is just, never oppressive. Your decree is fair, never biased. You have laid out the proofs, provided the excuses, warned in advance, and enticed with kindness. You have set forth examples, given ample respite, and delayed judgment while fully capable of acting swiftly. You have waited, though fully able to hasten.

Your patience is not from weakness, nor Your delay from incapacity. Your withholding is not from forgetfulness, nor Your waiting from hesitation. Rather, it is so that Your proof may be most complete, Your generosity most perfect, Your kindness most abundant, and Your blessings most complete. All of this has been and will always be.

Your proof is too great to be fully described. Your glory is beyond all limits. Your blessings are too many to be counted entirely. Your generosity is too vast to be fully thanked. My silence falls short of praising You. My speech fails to glorify You. My best effort is to acknowledge my inability—not out of reluctance, O my God, but out of sheer incapacity.

So here I am, coming to You in hope, asking for Your best hospitality. Send Your blessings upon Muhammad and his family. Hear my whispers, answer my prayer, and do not let my day end in disappointment. Do not reject me in my supplication. Honour my departure from You and my return to You.

Indeed, You are never constrained by what You will, nor incapable of what You are asked. You are over all things capable. And there is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.
